Pirate Browser Hit Torrent Sites

The largest BitTorrent tracker in the world, The Pirate Bay, is now celebrating a massive 100,000 downloads of its own censorship dodging Pirate Browser in just a couple days. The new browser, containing Firefox portable, foxyproxy, and Tor, was developed by TPB team to get around government blockades placed on torrent services and other file-sharing sites.

It’s been a while that a range of European countries, including the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, and Ireland, have imposed blocks on accessing TPB and other services. For example, in the UK, online filters will have to become default for all packages offered by Internet service providers. This is why the Pirate Browser has additional purposes beyond torrenting.

It should be noted that the browser by itself doesn’t guarantee anonymity. The Pirate Bay points out that if you really want to get that rare commodity, you can sign up with a trusted VPN in order to route your traffic through. However, even this way won’t secure you 100%.

In the meantime, the immediate success of the Pirate Browser will be a blow to such governments as the UK’s, where its deeply unpopular policy, traditionally dressed up as a moral crusade to protect kids, is actually being used to decide what is and what is not acceptable for grown adults to access on the Internet. The BitTorrent tracker itself has long been a target of entertainment industry backed politicians who are told that piracy is an enormous threat to the world economy. New Rules on Kids iOS Apps

Apple is ready to introduce a Kids category in its iOS 7 and is laying down new rules for app developers. The new guidelines set out Apple’s policy on privacy, advertising and use of in-app purchases aimed at kids under 13.

The move comes after news stories about kids racking up enormous bills purchasing virtual items in mobile games without parents’ knowledge. The new rules are published ahead of the publication this autumn of a report on kids’ apps.

The key points of the new rules say that apps primarily intended for kids under 13 must include a privacy policy, may not include behavioral advertising or any contextual ads, and must get parental permission or use a parental gate before linking out of the app or engaging in commerce.

Actually, new laws weren’t a big surprise for the app developers, because many of them have added privacy policies and implemented parental gates in their applications recently, in response to private feedback from the tech giant.

However, Apple didn’t set guidelines on how kids’ app developers may use analytics instruments to collect data on what their audience is doing, while developers in many other countries are governed by existing legislation in this area. The new rules also explain how the new Kids category on the App Store will be structured, with the three age buckets: kids ages 5 and under, ages 6-8, or ages 9-11. This innovation was officially announced at Apple’s WWDC conference earlier this summer, and will be introduced on Apple’s store as part of its new iOS 7 software in a few weeks.

The new structure will allow parents to find applications previously scattered between the Books, Education, Games and Entertainment sections. The company is now recruiting an App Store Kids & Education Editor based in its London office to help with the introduction of the new category.

The kids’ apps market is currently bustling with activity, from major brand-owners including Disney, the BBC and Nickelodeon to indie companies like Toca Boca and Nosy Crow. The latest report from British telecoms regulator Ofcom revealed that over 90% of parents who own a tablet admit that their kids either use it or have one of their own. 40% of them also say that their kids use the gadget every day.

Google Blocked Windows YouTube App

Recently Microsoft had to relaunch its YouTube app for Windows Phone smartphones after Google’s request, but the search giant still blocked it. YouTube app had originally been removed from the Windows Phone store late this spring after Google complained to the software giant about its ability to download videos to the phones and preventing video ads from playing.

The app was relaunched last week, but just in a few days Google had to block it again, because Microsoft failed to make the browser upgrades essential to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience – instead, the company just re-released a YouTube app which violated Google’s Terms of Service. As a result, the app was disabled once again. This statement contradicts Microsoft’s public announcement made after the application was relaunched in August, when the company claimed that it was ready to provide great experience its consumers expect while addressing the concerns Google expressed earlier, including the addition of adverts.

At the time, Microsoft expressed hopes for continuing the collaboration with Google, but these prospects seem less hopeful now. The software giant later published a longer blog post by its vice president and deputy general counsel, David Howard, which explaining why their app was taken down again. They say that the reason was that Google asked Microsoft to switch the app to a new coding language, HTML5, which was quite weird since neither similar iOS app nor its Android fellow are built on HTML5. In result, experts from both companies acknowledged that creating a YouTube app based on HTML5 would be technically difficult and time consuming – perhaps, that’s why iOS and Android apps weren’t using it either.

So, after Microsoft re-published its non-HTML5 YouTube short-term app, Google decided to block it. It is unclear whether the current spat finds its way into a future antitrust complaint, but it is clearly not the first time YouTube appeared a pawn in wider clashes between Microsoft and other tech giants.

YouTube app used to be preloaded in iOS software, but was removed from the latest version of OS, because Google and Apple’s licensing deal wasn’t renewed. Though, Google launched a standalone version of the application through Apple’s App Store. Mobile is very important to YouTube, which accounts for over a quarter of its global watch time, and over 1 billion views per day.

Oracle CEO Supported NSA Spying

Oracle Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison was seen expressing the enthusiastic support for the NSA’s global surveillance of the worldwide web and everyone on it. Ellison claimed that some things said about the NSA were misleading – for example, information was already being collected long before the agency was seeing it. Moreover, such organizations as credit card companies had all this information long before the National Security Agency.

However, it is obvious that there is some difference between a credit card company building a file on its customer and the most powerful government of the world potentially keeping records on everyone. America & Germany Won’t Spy on Industry or Government

After the Snowden leaks, the United States has been trying to fix its relationship with Germany. According to previous reports, the German government was furious when it found out that American spooks were spying on its own government. This is why the United States has verbally committed to enter into a no-spying agreement with Germany. However, this will just block government and industrial espionage, so citizens remain fair game.

Media reports confirm that the verbal commitment was given in talks with the German Federal Intelligence Service. Germany explains that there must be no governmental or industrial espionage between the US and Germany, with standards for the cooperation of intelligence services of European Union being hammered out. Although the United States has no problems trusting Germany, it wants to keep an eye on other members of the EU.

It was known that the no spying agreement talks were included into an 8-point program proposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany learned that American intelligence services comply with German legislation, with the operators of the biggest German Internet exchanges and the federal government finding no evidence that the United States spied on Germans. Google Confirmed Android BitCoin Wallets Vulnerability

The tech giant has recently confirmed reports of a weakness in Android’s Java Cryptography Architecture which has made BitCoin wallets vulnerable to theft. According to the reports, about $5,700 worth of the BitCoin currency had been stolen because of the vulnerability on Android.

Android security engineers admitted that apps using the Java Cryptography may not receive cryptographically strong values on Android devices. In response, the BitCoin Foundation, which oversees the BitCoin economy, has warned developers of Android wallet apps to update them as soon as possible, while also encouraging users to update their apps or transfer their cyber currency to more secure wallets. The outfit explained that the problem would affect everyone who had a wallet generated by any Android application.

Security engineers have released instructions for developers on one way to update their applications in order to fix the vulnerability. Google has also announced that its Android team have developed patches and provided these to handset partners.

Earlier, security company Symantec has claimed that hundreds of thousands of Android applications – not only BitCoin wallets, but also games, productivity, music and other kinds of apps – may also be affected by the flaw in Android’s SecureRandom component for generating secure random numbers. The security experts showed the breakdown of Android application which are potentially affected by the SecureRandom vulnerability – it was found that more than 320,000 apps using SecureRandom do it in the same way the BitCoin wallets did.

As such, security experts strongly advise users of Android BitCoin wallet applications to check whether they are affected and if they do, to follow the steps published by bitcoin.org in order to ensure safety of their funds. The BitCoin Foundation revealed that the total value of all currency in circulation is over $1.3 billion, while its website claims that there has been only one major security incident in the protocol, fixed three years ago.

The current problem is regarded as controversial – while BitCoin critics call it a further reason to be cautious about cyber currency, its supporters point at the speed with which the vulnerability was identified and addressed.
